New product! This large, one liter kannenbaecker-style mug is finished in a classic salt glaze. The mug is decal decorated with a colorful, festive Oktoberfest Munchen scene and is completed with a flat pewter lid with hop thumb lift.
Salt glaze pottery is stoneware with a glaze of glossy, translucent, and slightly orange peel-like texture which is formed by throwing common salt into the kiln during the firing process. Sodium from the salt reacts with silica in the clay body to form a glassy coating of sodium silicate.
The craft and tradition of salt glaze stoneware goes back to the 15th century, when artisans of the Westerwald region of Germany perfected the craft.
